RUSTON , LA - Positive reports on U.S. retail sales at Christmas time paved the way for the Dow to close above 10,000 for the first time since May of 2002.

“Investors are encouraged by a number of things including positive economic indicators and the feds apparent commitment to holding interest rates where they are for a while, “said Dean Mailhes , Vice President Argent Financial Group.

The Dow Jones industrial average closed up 85 points, or 0.85 percent, at 10,007, according to the latest available data. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index ended up 12 points, or 1.15 percent, at 1,071. The technology-focused Nasdaq Composite Index closed up 37 points, or 1.95 percent, at 1,942.

Other encouraging news to investors that may have played a part in the Dow’s rise of 85 points on Thursday include word from the Commerce Department that consumers bought more new cars, furniture and electronics during November than predicted. Reports like these may have investors convinced that holiday business will be stronger this year than last.

“The market has been waiting for good news. The more confident the investor, the more money you will see flowing from the sidelines,” Mailhes said.
